Does AI have any place in music?

Kelly Clarkson’s AI take, the reported NRL grand final tribute lineup, Karnivool tickets and your NightFest weekend.

Does AI have any place in music?

Kelly Clarkson welcomes the creative tools, but wants AI artists on separate charts. Meanwhile, the NRL grand final’s reported tribute lineup has emerged, Karnivool tickets are on sale and NightFest has Canberra’s weekend covered.

Kelly Clarkson’s AI take, briefly

On Las Culturistas, Clarkson said she enjoys AI’s creative possibilities, including in music. Her sticking point is AI artists competing with humans on the same charts. She wants separate charts, comparing the alternative to robots taking on people at the Olympics.

Critics questioned why she welcomes AI in other creative fields while wanting that distinction for musicians. Fair boundary, or does it dodge the bigger question?

Aussie artists reportedly unite for NRL tribute

A tribute to Jai Arrow

FOX Sports reports that Amy Shark and members of The Screaming Jets, Peking Duk, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers and Grinspoon are expected to come together for Sunday’s NRL grand final tribute to Jai Arrow, citing The Australian.

The retired South Sydney player, who is living with motor neurone disease, is set to take a lap of honour while the musicians perform “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. The plans follow Tones and I’s withdrawal, with the exact performance time still shifting in the reporting.

If this week’s Canberra announcement went straight into your diary, here’s the next bit: tickets went on sale today, Friday 2 October, at 9am local time.

Karnivool’s In Verses regional run hits UC Refectory on Friday 27 November. Big riffs, a room full of fans and a Canberra date that saves us an interstate trip. That’ll do nicely.

NightFest: pick your night

Three more nights under the lights

Commonwealth Park · Friday 2 to Sunday 4 October · 6.30–10.30pm nightly

Floriade NightFest / Events ACT

Tim Finn was on Thursday’s opening-night bill. Here’s how the rest of NightFest’s headline lineup shapes up:

  1. Fri 2 OctBusby Marou + Christine Anu
  2. Sat 3 OctPacific Avenue
  3. Sun 4 OctThe Temper Trap

Those are the event hours, so check the programme for individual set times. There’s more happening around the park too, with local performers, DJs and after-dark entertainment alongside the headline acts.

Pacific Avenue on Saturday or The Temper Trap to finish the weekend? Either way, leave some time to wander through the lights. “Sweet Disposition” at Commonwealth Park sounds like a pretty decent Sunday plan.

Have the AI argument, put a gig in the diary, and go see someone make a bit of noise this weekend. Canberra’s got options.
